Orientation is the official start to the Yale-NUS College education and the chance for first-year students to meet their classmates, immerse themselves into the community and the larger campus life, and learn about the resources at Yale-NUS College. In 2017, theme for orientation was “Take flight”, which represented how the College is ready to soar to greater heights, having marked a key foundational milestone with the successful graduation of its first class.
On 11 August 2017, weeks of orientation culminated in First Year Assembly ‘17, an annual ceremony where new students are formally welcomed by the Yale-NUS College community. Aside from speeches by key College figures, the ceremony also featured a performance by the Yale-NUS Barbershop Chorus.
In the Week 7 Learning Across Boundaries (LAB) programme, first-year students, faculty and staff engage inlearning projects of up to a week that explore themes of the Common Curriculum outside the confines of a traditional classroom. Week 7 LAB projects are faculty-generated initiatives that are organised in collaboration with the Centre for International & Professional Experience (CIPE).
