Academic Dress

The Yale-NUS College academic dress comprises a base gown, hood, sash and mortarboard.

The black base gown is accompanied by a hood with blue and white trim. In addition, the Yale-NUS academic dress will include an orange sash with a batik-inspired print of the College’s Kingfisher mascot, Halcyon. The sash will have blue trim on both ends of the sash and white trim along the edges. This will be worn hanging over the front of the academic dress.

The elements and colours of the Yale-NUS academic dress incorporate elements from the National University of Singapore and Yale University in their hood and sash colours respectively. In addition, the use of the hood and sash correspondingly reflects the practices at NUS and Yale.

*The sash is a batik-inspired print designed by Yale-NUS student Natalie Tan from the Class of 2017.

Vendor Information

The vendor for the Yale-NUS student academic dress is Serangoon Broadway Studio.

Online Ordering of Academic Dress

Students are requested to obtain the College’s academic dress from the official vendor, Serangoon Broadway Studio, to ensure consistency of the colour and material of the academic dress.

Please place your order for your Academic Dress online from 23 April 2018 – 9 May 2018. Follow the instructions previously sent to you via email.

You may choose to make an appointment for the academic dress collection immediately after the submission of the academic dress order form, or at any other convenient time by logging in again. Please note that appointment slots are on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you are not sure about your gown or mortarboard size when you submit your order, you will be fitted for the correct size when you collect your academic dress from the vendor.

Rental and Order Rate

Payment for the academic dress must be made upon collection. The academic dress can be purchased at S$171.20. Alternately, you can choose to rent the academic dress at S$48.15, which will include a refundable deposit of S$150. The entire set includes the gown, hood, sash and mortarboard. For rentals, the gown, hood, sash and mortarboard must be returned to the vendor.

Students who choose to rent the gown, but would like to keep the sash, can purchase the sash directly from Serangoon Broadway at S$85.

All prices already include 7% GST (except for the $150 rental deposit, which is not GST-applicable).

Collection of Academic Dress and Invite Pack

You can collect your academic dress from 10 May 2018 – 27 May 2018. You will collect your academic dress from Serangoon Broadway’s office:

At the collection of your academic dress, you will also collect your Invite Pack, which will contain the following items:

  1. Information Card. This item contains all the information you need for the ceremony. Please read this document thoroughly before the ceremony.
  2. Your Graduate Attendance Card. The Graduate Attendance Card serves as your entry pass to the ceremony. It is also required by the Ceremony Official to ensure your name is in the system before you are presented on stage. No graduate can be presented without the card.
  3. Your requested number of Guest Cards. Each Guest Card admits one guest into the hall for the ceremony. Guests cannot be admitted into the hall without the card.

Return of Rented Academic Dress

If you rented the academic dress, you have to return it to Serangoon Broadway from 28 May 2018 – 17 June 2018. Serangoon Broadway staff will be present at the UCC after the ceremony on 28 May, and you can return the academic dress to them after the ceremony if you wish.
